Water is irrigated into the fields before planting of the rice
crop in late spring. Based on today’s water productivity and
a projected diet of 3000 kcal/day, an additional 5600 km3/
year of water needs to be appropriated by 2050 to eradicate
undernutrition and feed an additional three billion world
inhabitants. This is almost three times as much as the present
global consumptive water use in irrigation. – source: SIWI.
